Still Getting Outside

Posted on October 5, 2026October 5, 2026 By Melissa

The weather this fall has been so perfect for Mike to be able to get outside as much as possible!

In the beginning of last month, Mike, William, John and Frans went to the Elizabeth Hall Wetlands in Lethbridge. The weather was perfect that day for the herons to be fishing and for the turtles to be out sunning themselves.

Mike has also been able to enjoy going to the river in town several times, and with the leaves starting to change color, it is even more beautiful!

Last week, Mike was able to come out to our place for a few hours on a beautiful, non windy day. He has his electric wheelchair back so was able to wander around by himself (I checked on him often). That tiny little bit of independence is so important for him to have!

Beyond all the activities, Mike is still working hard with his walker. Every time that William works with Mike, they are practicing walking, and at least once a week, I try to go help him with that as well. He is so determind, and works so hard!

I want to say thanks to the staff in the Community Support Beds who also help with this, as it is still a 2 person activity to get Mike secured and have the wheelchair ready for when he needs a break!

Mike has also been trying to work on his speech, though this is quite difficult for him. We will keep trying new techniques and practicing sounds…not being able to communicate is such a hard thing to have to deal with!

Mike never complains though, just keeps trying to work hard for improvement.

Thanks for continuing to follow along!
