Mike's Journey

Dog Sledding in Canmore, Alberta

Posted on March 29, 2026 By Melissa

Well, I think it’s safe to say Mike had a pretty eventful Birthday Week!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to visit Mike and wish him a Happy Birthday, and to those who sent messages or texts! He really appreciated it all 🙂

The week started last Monday with a drive out to Drumheller with Frans and William. It was a spontaneous decision to go there, and though the Royal Tyrrell Museum ended up being closed that day, they still had an enjoyable day taking the back roads, and eventually making it back home again.

Thursday was Mike’s 48th Birthday. The staff at the CTB beds decorated the family room, Stephanie brought cake and coffee for everyone, and there was a steady stream of visitors all day!! Mike really enjoyed that, and it was a great day for him.

But of course, the highlight of the week was Friday.

Mike’s day started early, with staff getting his breakfast tube feed going early so he could be ready to leave by 8:45. John met them in town, and off they went with William and Frans to Canmore for the day!

Arriving in Canmore with plenty of time before they had to be at Howling Dog Tours, they had lunch, got dressed into their winter gear, and then went to meet the tour van that would bring them to their destination.

The weather was perfect. Lots of fresh snow, but not too cold! Mike, William, John and Frans hopped into the van that took them 25 minutes down a bumpy road, sometimes pushing snow with the van. Mike got priority seating, right up front, and got to enjoy the ride probably a little smoother than those in the back…

The guides at Howling Dog Tours were very accommodating, helping William lift Mike into the sled, and then putting a bunch of blankets around him to make him comfortable. Typically these sleds fit two people inside, but it gets a little cozy, so William was able to stand on the back instead.

The guide would stop to let William run ahead a few times, then they would drive by so he could get videos and pictures…

After a few hours of dog sledding, it was time to start heading home. All that fresh air and fun worked up a good appetite and there was still a three hour drive home. So after a stop at Smitty’s for supper, the tired, but happy crew headed home.

Thank you again to Mr. Frans and William for making these adventures possible!! And to all who have donated, because without that, we would not be able to have William help Mike enjoy these adventures!

Enjoy the rest of the pictures 🙂
